Yeah, I don't think Sheldor the Conquerer gets drunk (intentionally) or smacks people on the butt. He (original Sheldon) says some pretty condescending and dismissive things, but he doesn't openly, blatantly mock people, at least from what I can remember.

It's totally legit to like this scene and find it meaningful, (I don't) but I think Nutz is correct that it would've played-out much differently, had it taken place earlier on.
That's the whole point of getting drunk, letting go. I can't tell you how much mental energy it takes to control the world around you. I thought slapping Amy was funny, there's a Texan under the cool Spock exterior. Sheldon is both hilarious and embarrassing when drunk, his decline hasn't been as spectacular as Charlie Sheen; but the nudity in public, being outrageous, loud singing, starting fights, it's all there. Next he'll end up in jail, wait a minute! I really can't stand that scene where Sheldon goes to Wil Wheatons place to fight him. In my opinion that was some of the worst acting Jim has ever done on the show. He won awards for his drunk scene in 'The Pants Alternative' and it's not difficult to see why. And then there's the 'Stag' episode which was terrible.

So we have 4 gifs. 2 from the early years, and 2 later ones. Which just goes to show, they can't just have Sheldon drunk when the writing has become this poor. It's not a magic bandaid.

Oh, I'll never forgive them for Stag Night. It's my white whale. So hypocritical, so illogical, so prudish. Anywaaaaayyyy...*this* is Sheldor the Conqueror:

No sign of a Romantic Prince there! I think in fifteen years time, audiences will look back on BB as having broken through with unique characters. And it will be interesting to see if new shows try to be inventive. I've been wondering where they could have gone with Sheldon. I'm not sure I agree with the 'groundhog day' narrative. I think if you live alone, maybe. But just being around people, and alcohol, changes people rapidly. So even just Sheldon and Leonard would have led to changes. Just been reading some of that old Hyperreality stuff, and BB does it well

I think fans do idolize certain characters, it's part of that old duality, the heroes wore white, etc But a real character is like a real person, they have a wide ranging personality. In an article Sheldon is described as monstrous. And in that clip 'Jim interview' he talked of letting out the monster inside. I wonder if being given permission, as Sheldon, to express his darker side, has made him more aware of himself. I don't really think that Sheldon would have people sterilised, or exploding chips put in their heads. That's just his frustration at human stupidity. But he did want to flush a live bird down a toilet, not very pleasant! In the article, he also said that all the characters were individually annoying, but that they worked well together, and the show had become a twenty minute meme. Still love Sheldon!
The most striking thing about Sheldon is he is not immoral. In fact, that article calling him a monster is quite ludicrous in my opinion. Morally and immorally play no part in his observations. He's a fictional and somewhat otherworldly creation, who tries to avoid humanity, not purposely set out to destroy it.

That line "when I rise to power, people who say that will be sterilised" is genius. I love it coming from Sheldon. It's funny because it's the word of a dictator, from a man who seems afraid of the world. He would do anything to steer clear of trouble, loud voices, changes to his routine. Sheldon is at far more risk from those around him, than anyone is of him.

I can see what you are driving at from the actors point of view. Sheldon says things no one would ever get away with. His charm, used to be, that he never intentionally tried to cause harm. He was protecting himself. Unfortunately, the new Sheldon doesn't seem that innocent anymore. Their attempts to humanise him have made him more of a monster. Perhaps, monster is still too strong a word, an annoying jerk. I never really saw him as a bad person in the early days. He was kind of an antihero.
It's actually just another cliche they attached to his character, the mad scientist. L>'The guy is one lab accident away from being a supervillain.' But again it just exposes peoples fear of science and scientists(at least they moved on from how they used to treat witches). I bet everytime some thinker challenged the pervading view, they were demonized, from Copernicus, Frankenstein, Darwin, etc.[Image: tumblr_lumwfqJDWm1qdg3o0.gif]

This is an interesting thought because I always focus on their treatment of nerd culture, but others here, and yourself have noticed that this ideology is also sending a message about science, scientists and intellectuals. Clever people are weird, vaguely dangerous and definitely not attractive.

Perhaps it never intended to, but a show as big as BB, by its position and it's obligation to the network, has become part of a message that they either want to embrace (ie, give 10 seasons to) or they don't.

Moonbase

When a character becomes accountable for what lies beyond the next episode then you know there is too much external influence on the creative process. Fan expectation being most destructive of all. Sheldon, should be the writers tool, to express whatever they please but when he becomes the property of a ship, you have to ask yourself who is in control of the show.
