Beverly gives me the creeps.

yeah, I can see why Leonard is so messed up; NOT that I think its an excuse at all for his behavior towards Penny.

Even though Sheldon grew up with an overly religious home, his mom and (I assume) his meemaw taught him to be a gentleman (of course the new Sheldon is an ass Dodgy ). He may not get it right all the time, but he wasn't deliberately trying manipulating anyone...back then.

The show throwing in the alcoholic dad and fighting wasn't necessary. I think it's sad that he has such a reaction to the arguing and fighting. Its not funny.

I guess it was a way to get sympathy for him or to excuse the misogynistic comments he is making now.
But Bev H and Sheldon have so many common traits; cleanliness, pedantic, intellectual, aloof and distant, condescending. I admit she has a low 'creepy' level! Maybe supressed desires, make both her, and Amy(mid-high 'creepy'level) creepy! But she's like a wirlwind of psychoanalysis, she spins in, deconstructs everyone(except Sheldon), and their relationships, and moves on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAhkifqwZ3k
There is a BBT cast answers your questions. I believe it was for the Season 3 DVDs. In it both Jim and Johnny talk about that each of their characters wanted to have the other ones moms while growing up so instead of finding a girl that reminded them of their moms (which most boys do) they would find someone who reminded them of the mom they wanted (Leonard/Mary and Sheldon/Beverly).

All I can say about this is
1. Epic fail with Amy. That might have been the character she was introduced as in season 4, but people disliked her so much she was rewritten to be the even more unlikable character she is today (they should have just canned the character and added another character).

2. Since I can't figure out how rewriting these characters to be less of the people they were introduced as to make these relationships "work" is funny, the show has become more of a "be careful what you wish for" cautionary black comedic farce. (That unfortunately isn't very funny)

You can only blame your behavior on your upbringing for so long. At some point being an asshole becomes a choice.

I think we all create an 'idealised partner'. That might include; an aspect of opposite sex parent+a characteristic from another relative+characteristics(and particularly 'look') of a TV/film character. But also I think people can be attracted to a partner who has all the traits that were lacking in the opposite sex parent. Hence, Leonard is attracted to Penny. Sheldon is difficult. Mary is pleasant, straightforward, but a 'bible basher', literally! To Sheldon's intellect any form of superstition would have been an anathema.
Eh. *shrugs* Let's be honest, Leonard is attracted to Penny because she's a pretty blonde. If she hadn't been a young attractive girl, he wouldn't have stopped to talk to her when she moved in. There's nothing complicated about that.

Sheldon - has become a sad shell of his former self, and a complete puppet for the writers. What he might have originally actually liked and looked for in a partner has been, shall we say, swamped.
There wasn't even a chance to speculate on what kind of partner Sheldon would want; The writers created Fowler and now we are stuck with watching the train wreck that is Shamy. Dodgy

Sheldon has now fallen down to the same level with Penny; sad, directionless and using alcohol to soften the blows of life. Just a few episodes ago he was going on about taking risks, being dedicated to his beliefs and being a "dreamer". Now he is full of self doubt and alcohol.

Someone needs to give him the "Dreamers" talk and and it needs to not be Leonard or Amy. Maybe someone more invested in his well-being than their own selfish goals.

The whole identity of this character has been torn to shit; and it'll be worse if its just a throw away plot that won't get brought up again.

I suspect we'll know in short order whether it's a throw-away. Like Tuesday.
Just wanted to say that I already am wishing for the good old days of season 5 and 6 considering the way the show IMO has taken a nosedive in the past few episodes of season 7. The mean-spirited tone is back, Penny keeps becoming more hollow-eyed, bitter, dispassionate, and dependent on Leonard, and Sheldon, where do I even start. All I can say is that I am shocked and confused by the sudden turn the writing for this character has taken. Sheldon willingly drinking and getting drunk, his failing at his job again and again, and his slapping Amy's ass and kissing her left and right while only a few episodes ago he still had problems even hugging people?

This is NOT Sheldon. All this is very OOC and is not consistent with the character they have been depicting in the past 6 seasons - and even in the beginning of season 7. Why did the writers decide to do this? They are destroying the character, stripping him of everything that made him "Sheldon" and denying him any victories. They are taking away everything from him: his quirks, his confidence, his sexual orientation, his intellect, his adulthood, his career, his dignity and his dreams, and are only leaving a couple of ‘negative’ traits such as arrogance and acting/being childish and naïve. I don't know how some fans (Shamy fans in particular) can be OK with all this and call it character growth only because now Sheldon kisses Amy.

As to what is going on with Sheldon and why he is acting this way IN the universe of the Show, I think either he is having a nervous breakdown, as others have mentioned, or Amy has doubled the dose of the drug she has been putting in his food and drink!
