That was superb. I do not understand why they haven't done a whole Rambo/Predator/Tropical Thunder whatever skit. So many opportunities.

Maybe it was just jealousy 'cos 'Community'.

Ach no, it's evidently an ongoing joke.
He's been kvetching about Geology and Geologists since the Pants Alternative...

"Dr. Randall from the Geology Department, only man who’s happy when they take his work for granite. Ba-da cha! I kid the geologists, of course, but it’s only because I have no respect for the field."

He also has a carp in the Luminous Fish episode...(did you see what I did there? Carp? Eh?)

Sheldon: At the last department party, Dr Finkleday cornered me and talked about spelunking for 45 minutes.
Leonard: Yes, I was there.
Sheldon: You know what’s interesting about caves, Leonard?
Leonard: What?
Sheldon: Nothing.

There's also "Dear god not the dirt people!", and as everyone has mentioned "Geology isn't a real science!" where he sacrifices himself in HISTRIONIC PAINTBALL DEATH..

I presume the joke is that this is Sheldon's version of going to the dogs...Sleeping with a Geology textbook means he's hit rock bottom...

(I'm just fucking full of puns tonight)

Ok folks, Just got done watching this episode and prelims say that it wasn't bad. Like 'worthy of a Penny Blossom good' or Like 'don't need to skip' good.

The Geology deal was a bait and switch for writing fodder. I'm sure the Shamy people thought Sheldon was gonna wake up next to her. SIKE! Now they know how it feels to get the old switch-a-roo. NO ONE IS SAFE. Dodgy

Guess what? NO SHAMY. Like minimal interaction. Big Grin

Penny, for the most part, is probably one of the best friends Sheldon has on this show. She may not be as smart as the rest of the pack but at least she genuinely cares. Sheldon's always considered her opinion whether he agrees or not. Sheldon's distain for the Lenny relationship will always be funny and it was tonight. Even the subplots with Raj and Howard weren't bad. Im starting to get on board with the Sheldon/Howard friendship even though I think I liked it better when they weren't so buddy-buddy. Raj didn't dick up his date.

I wouldn't say the episode was vintage caliber, but definitely much better the the past couple travesties that we have had to sit through; and there was NO SHAMY.

Im feeling generous, there may be a Penny blossom awarded tonight....

EDIT: By NO SHAMY I mean in a romantic sense. Fowler was minimal, no bitching about affection and sex.

I could've sworn that there was a scene where Sheldon was drunk and Amy was escorting him to his room but before he entered he was knocking on his door. She looked pretty annoyed with him by the looks of the picture, did they take that scene out? Or by 'no Shamy' you mean that there's no 'romance' going on between them? I know that she, along with Leonard, made some suggestions on some other fields he could check out but I don't think Sheldon accepted any of them. Amy wasn't really that helpful with him anyway and she's supposed to be the 'supportive GF'. What kind of GF doesn't give a shit about her own BF's depression over his inactive career? I think they'll leave the drunk Shamy sex for the second to last season. Shark

It's funny how Penny shows more concern over Sheldon, and even Raj at times, than she does for her own BF. I personally don't agree with her advising him to quit theoretical physics altogether. It's embarrassing to have the writers now make it look as if a genius like Sheldon isn't even compatible enough for the one subject he put all of his hardwork into. I don't think anyone understands just how important this crisis in his career is to him, and in reality it should really be Penny that needs to move on with a different career. I'm sorry but she's in a bad place with her acting right now.

While I am still pissed over the fact that Sheldon isn't comfortable seeing the Lenny split its good to know that even till now he doesn't believe that their 'relationship' is believable nor is exactly how Penny dreamed it would turn out to be. Deep down I think she wouldn't even take herself seriously after saying that load of crap. It's pretty confusing because one episode you see Sheldon freaking out over the rumors of them splitting up and then next thing you he's back to mocking them again but then I have to remember the idiots that are writing this show. He's probably did it for the sake of homeostasis and his fear of being alone even if Amy will 'always be there for him'.Morlock

Howard and Sheldon have always been hysterical together even more so than him and Raj. If they weren't so annoyed with one another they'd have been the best pals ever. Sheldon has the BEST chemistry with those who are the total opposite of who he is, hasn't anyone noticed that?

Theories about Penny to explain this season:
1. She's a total drunk and is no longer able to give good advise (or remember it the next day even if she does)

2. She completely miserable and since misery loves company, she's determined to drag as many friends down with her.

3. She's been brainwashed by Leonard and is now actively trying to destroy Sheldon (with a lot of "guidance" from Leonard and her Bestie.

I'm kind of leaning toward the Brainwashing (with a little drug therapy in her wine)
“There are no scenes more fun to do, I feel like, than the ones between Sheldon and Penny. They are such a wonderful odd couple.” - Jim Parsons

By No Shamy, I meant no romance. (I shoulda clarified that, oopsy Blush )

AFF's ass is still there but it wasn't spotlight stealing; almost an after thought. The episode was pretty much about Sheldon. They did minimize the career crisis, but I expected that. I think its gonna be some drawn out story arc for the finale.

I tell you what, if I hadn't read the TR, I'm sure my head would have exploded thinking that Sheldon had had drunk sex with Fowler. SOOOOO glad that wasn't the case. SOOOO glad.

He opened the door. They went in and he woke up with the geology book. Comedic bait and switch. Probably really pissed the shAMYs off.
