RE: Like an old married couple - Ratman77 - 02-08-2016

Part 1:

Hello, dear „Shenny“-shipper-friends and nostalgics!

I want to say it right at first.
I am angry!!! Angry
Yes I am!
When I am follow this topics, evolutions and events at the show then I cannot help but to be angry.
Angry, sad and frustrated.

(I know that I repeat myself in many cases, but….sorry, I am not able to say it in another way.)

For a few days I was looking at the net for “Shenny”-fanvideos. My laptop had a fault, so that it was playing all at silence. But that was not bad. When you see this scenes with them in silence than the tension, the affection, the attraction and this chemistry between them only comes clearer. It was nice, Smile  but after a few minutes my anger becomes also much bigger, when I compared this times with the actually seasons Angry .  Not only for the “Shenny”, also in general.

Where is it gone? Where is this great innovative nerd-comedy of the early years gone? Why they must change it into this……well I have no correct description for it.

For me, the possibility of the “Shenny” was always bounded with the first concept of the show.

Nerds or nerd-like figures were no rarity on the TV-screen. The 80ies show “Riptide” had the character “Murray”, the school-comedy “Parker Lewis can’t lose” had “Jerry”, “Egon Spengler” was the nerd of the “Ghostbusters” and even the crew of the english 60ie SciFi- puppet-show “Thunderbirds” had with “Brains” a nerd-like member. But this nerds were only sidekicks. Figures of the second row, who were (with their smartness) only the helpers of the main-characters. “TBBT” made a step forward and let all characters (except Penny) be nerds. That was new and bold.
Because of this new topic and point of view, it was interesting and I was convinced that the series would take also in another aspects new ways. It was from the first minute clear that Leonard wanted Penny become into his bed. Howie tried it also with his crude kind and also Raj was not hiding that Penny makes him nervous. Because of the new approach of the series and the (apparent) ambition to swim against the mainstream, I was thinking that Penny (if at all) , with no one of this three would start an relationship (“because that would be so damn conventional”, I thought) but would turn to the one, who –apparently- had no interest. (You know which one I mean?). This scenes (“babarian”, “panty”, “Vegas” ect.)  seemed to confirm this and the two came also closer and closer.  But then they put them into this relationships who have-for me- no base. Emotional or logical.
(This “minus” and plus”-graphic that “Tuesday Payamas” had posted, shows it in a perfect way Idea .) Many people may it see in another way but I was always thinking that also relationships must have a ground which the viewer can retrace.

RE: Like an old married couple - Ratman77 - 02-08-2016

Part 2:

“Spider-Man”
is there an example. The producer had said, that the viewer should understand why Peter loves MJ. And yes, I could understand. It was built in a good way, and even if I don’t like the “Spider-Man”-movies so much I had to admit that it was good made for the characters. In the case of “TBBT”-relationships there is nothing like that. No possible explanation why this couples are together. Huh

“Idle Miscreant” had send me once as answer of one of my posts this dialog between Penny and Sheldon about Leonard, where Penny had said that she knows that he is a liar, cheater, ect,….but she still love him. That hit it on the nail. It was like a (woodhammer)-message to the viewers:

“There is no explanation! We had decided and you have to swallow it!”

That is crude and shows that there is not many believe in the mind of the viewers. And than there is this other thing. When I remember it well, than it was Stewart who had said this lines that it was Leonard who has enriched Pennys life and led her more thinking about the world,  bla, bla, bla.
Dear american members of the “Shenny”-HQ, it was your “pope of critics” Roger Ebert who had said that he hates it if a writer uses an established character to make advertising for another character. And he is absolutely right. Symphaty for a character must be based on his…. ,yes character,… his behavior and his credibility. If the makers deem it necessary to explain the audience how “great” this character is through the mouth of another character than it is cheap and manipulative Morlock
. It is a kind of desperation and shows that they actually know that the character/ the relationship do not work.

When Penny and Sheldon were acting together, the fascination for them and the imagination of them, as a possible romantic couple, comes from itself.
There were no needs for explanations of any kinds and I think that is one of the greatest treasures a producer or a writer could have. When the constellation of the characters and the acting of the cast, works for its own. They indeed saw that and wrote at the first two seasons more and more scenes for them which justified the establishment and the success of the whole show. So long the “Shenny”-shippers were good enough and then they made this radical illogical turn that made this extraordinary series to an ordinary soap-opera.

RE: Like an old married couple - Ratman77 - 02-08-2016

Part 3:

(It is now like the “Matrix”-trilogy. The first movie seemed like something that there was never before, novel and revolutionary. With the second one it became the old boring “You are the chosen one”-plot. The same phenomenon like here).

When I look back in this relation than I can only say:
What a war!
And I do not mean a war between different fan-bases. I think that is by a long-living and successful show quit normal. No.
I mean what a war of the producers against one special (our) fan-base. I mean…..what to hell for “bad things” had we ever done to them? There is only the fact that we realized that there was (and is) a great chance to create an extraordinary relationship which could open many possibilities for (realistic) character-development and comedy. And if the fact that they want to ignore it is not bad enough they destroy one of the last things who had let stay the show beside other series.
I was believing that there were kinds of taboos…. concerning storylines thinks like “holy cows” and awe for their own creation. But then I read it.

Pregnancy. Sock

And I recognized…there is no more awe for their own creation. The taboo is broken, the “holy cow” slaughtered.
I am only one step away to handle the show (from the third season) like the “Highlander”-Fans it do with “The Quickening”, “The Sorcerer”, “Endgame” and “The Source”.

“This movies (seasons) do not exist.”

But, well……

…………you can say that I am a dreamer, a romantic or simply mad or stupid (many people do that) but I have still hope for the “Shenny”.
I cannot believe that they really let end the show without to give the two best characters a chance.
(That would be like a Klingon who kills without to show his face. Dishonorable).

No, I stand to the “Shenny” and if it must be I will go down like Jim Bowie at Alamo.

Greetings from Germany!!!

P.S.1: Sorry for my English. It was written again in a (angry) hurry.
P.S.2: On a german site someone has written: Would Sheldon from the beginning of the show be the character that he is now…he would never have become the most popular character.”    Any questions?
P.S.3: After that Miss Cuocco has posted this Photo that shows “TBBT”-cast with the “Friends”-cast, a german commentator has written:
“That is completely fitting…is “TBBT” meanwhile the remake of “Friends”.       Indicative, or not?

I feel your pain and I know all the Shennys everywhere do as well. Blossom

This started around Season 5, the show began to TELL us throught the mouths of the other characters what they wanted their public to think. It's pretty insulting to the intelligence of viewers. There have been far too examples of that on this show and with these ships. I was so angry when that pyshcic told Sheldon he must first accept Amy, before his life will get back on track again. Why? Well they don't need to explain why because its a pyschic. It's so lazy. Another one was the 'box of memories' which Penny was supposed to have kept of Leonard and most of them never happened. This did inspire our own Box of Memories page which listed scenes which DID appear on the show... between Sheldon and Penny of course. But yes, a big problem on this show and I think its cause they got nothing.

I only did S1-3 and there is a lot more even though they started to phase Shenny out ...

Roger Ebert is a wise man.

On your PS 2, if this cretinous jerk had been what we'd been given first off, along with his parasitic hag, the show wouldn't have made it past the writer's strike.

It took the show runners several years to work their way back to the horrific bullshit they tried to foist on people via the initial unaired pilot. All the things that the trial audience disliked have been gradually reinstated. So, in essence, people are now watching the very thing they didn't want to start with.

Excellent point, Space..
