John Oliver's absolutely hilarious (and spot on) explanation of Net Neutrality. This is worth watching even if you don't have a dog in the race. Thanks, Dev!

  Noteworthy Duos
Posted by: Idle Miscreant - 05-31-2014, 07:18 PM - Forum: The Submarine Controversy - Replies (12)

Born of a festering irritation at the fact that I couldn’t restrain myself and so consequently watched all the Sherlock episodes over a period of days rather than spacing them out over a year, or at least a few months, or EVEN A GODDAMN WEEK, I have created this thread to celebrate our favourite Duos in literature, film and television.

My personal preferred combination is the acerbic idealist or intellect coupled with the loyal, humble, terrier of a character. High-minded emotional-obliviousness vs salt-of-the-earth sensitivity. Reason vs Intuition etc. Utter God-King super-villain gobshitery vs long-suffering humanitarian minion would be another way of putting it. You get the gist.
I think the trope is Cloud Cuckoolander and his Minder.

As exemplified by;

Holmes & Watson

Don Quixote & Sancho Panza

Lawrence and Sherif Ali

Ahab & Starbuck

Rick & Louis (although Louis was a bit of a cad…)

And of course, our very own Sheldon and Leonard. Except of course, as I said earlier, I don’t recollect John interfering with Sherlock’s experiments, allowing him to think he’d cracked the case of a lifetime, then throwing off his friend’s heartbreak in order to try and have sex with the blonde across the hall. So NOT Leonard, maybe. Another loyal, steadfast, intuitive “prole” who balances out his intellect with emotion, and counters his ego….Penny, maybe.

Yes that's too many Sheldon and Penny pics. Fuck off. It's late...

  The problem with entitlement
Posted by: Tuesday Pajamas - 05-29-2014, 10:12 PM - Forum: Weekly Email Blast - Replies (10)

This article is very intersting...

I have seen this argument against the Leonard and Penny relationship time and time again. The idea of nerd entitlement, is both insulting to nerds and to the women who are harassed by them in the real world. So I thought some of you might like this posted. (thanks Dev)

It sums up a lot of my feelings about the relationship the writers chose to support on this show (rather than the far more intriguing Shenny connection).

And the gender reversal in Shamy, another relationship based on entitlement of an 'unfortunate' which is equally as insulting.
