The major demo is the only thing CBS cares about because, the major demo is the one advertisers pay attention to and will buy commercials on the network. Meaning = tons of money.
Over all viewers number is basically meaningless. If TBBT only had 10 million views but still was getting a 5.0 in the demo, it would still be considered a huge hit.

Season 6 average in the major demo after 16 episode was 5.36
Season 7 average in the major demo after 16 episode is 5.25

The major demo dropped some this season but lets be real, it's still a smash.

Sadly very little signs the ratings will crash and cause a change in the show. Sad

Yeah the demo numbers at the end are live and DVR.
Aye, the major demo I listed there is TV plus DVR, otherwise it's around 5.2...something....yes.
I know that's what the Moneybags pay attention to, but I just thought the folk on this site might be more interested in the overall numbers, because they represent the genuine attention of the public (full age range) rather than the merely "commercially viable" attention of those in the appropriate age-bracket. Also, it was more to highlight the interest various separate episodes produced, to see which were most popular amongst those that DO watch TBBT, rather than to compare the ratings of TBBT to that of other shows...I know it's a monster....A monster roaming unfettered....AT LARGE I SAY! IT SHOULD BE STOPPED!

That's cute.

What the numbers say to me is that the show is a hit but it's not the Shamy episodes that are bringing in the most people as we have been lead to believe on the other forum.
Stick a pair of glasses on it, and it's a dead ringer...

The most vocal section of the fanbase may not be the most numerous. In fact, I'd say a huge majority were casual viewers who don't want to be challenged, merely entertained, and have no high standard or expectation. They are also fickle, and if a character is overused to the point of tedium, or an actor overexposed, they'll bail on the show. The tendency for poor scriptwriting to say 'well, that was funny once, so let's do it again, only longer and louder' wrecks a lot of things.

And I actually thought Itchy Sweater was quite brilliant....in a terribly black-humoured way. I thought you people would have enjoyed it....it was HORRIBLE to Leonard. Galecki also got to ACT for once, which I'm sure the poor chap enjoyed. It was very amusing. They really give him fuckall to do usually, other than look exasperated...

EDIT - Re, Dissipation....I might just like Wil Wheaton and model train sets.....

I think the problem I had with Itchy Sweater was how incredibly malicious and spiteful he was. One of the things I loved about vintage Sheldon was he might have been a bastard, but he never meant to be spiteful to anyone, the things he said and did to people was because it was the truth as he saw it and he can't lie. (Although I admit, seeing Leonard covered in rashes was really, really satisfying)

CUTE!?
That's the Legendary Black Beast of Aaaaarrrrgghhhhh.....

I suppose you think the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog is cute too, you hippy!

As for the reason for the show being a hit, we all know the answer to that..

Although I suspect Penny and all her various appealing qualities might also have something to do with it. But in a nutshell, it's Sheldon and Penny who are the favourites, and by extension, Sheldon and Penny scenes which are the most popular. The polls support this. As does mere sentient observation. All the definitive and oft-quoted moments are Sheldon and Penny related...from Bath Items to Adhesive Ducks...and soon we shall hear the death knell of one of their greatest supporting characters....the Check Engine Light.
Alas.
Completely unrelated, I HAVE this poster. I feel it captures the feel of Vintage Big Bang perfectly. And Vintage Big Bang is the only Big Bang worth putting on a poster. It was iconic.

Updated Ratings for Those Who Like Numbers
Yes I'm still using the real time/dvr combo for the Demo. So sue me.
Moneybags care about Demos, but personally I find how many people watch in Real Time on the basis of Promos more interesting...To this end, I have highlighted the episodes that pulled in over 18. Except in the case of Friendship, they are also the highest rated overall.
