One of my pet peeves about the Big Bang re-boot is how they have destroyed brilliant character traits like Sheldon's exceptional brain power. The main thing that made me fall in love with his character in the first place. Sheldon was tactless but he was rarely wrong about anything. SMUG, ARROGANT and FANTASTIC!! That's all changed with the inclusion of Amy Farrah Fowler. Sheldon was always way TOO good for Amy. Jim was the breakout star of the Big Bang Theory, so talented and so perfect for Sheldon, it was a rare thing to behold. Amy could never measure up to that. So what did they do? They literally dismantled him. He's SO stupid now, he quotes incorrect facts, he's sexist and so immature it makes me want to scream.

So I have created this thread for Sheldon quotes, comparing the original Sheldon which drove the shows greatness (although it can also apply to any character which has been reduced for their ship) to the Re-boot Sheldon who seems to have had a lobotomy. The Meemaw episode is my first example:

Sheldon being smart:

Sheldon: "...There are a lot of advantages to buying in bulk. For example, I noticed that you purchase your tampons one month’s supply at a time.
Penny: What?
Sheldon: Well think about it, it’s a product that doesn’t spoil, and you’re going to be needing them for at least the next thirty years.
Penny: You want me to buy thirty years worth of tampons?
Sheldon: Well, thirty, thirty five, hey, when did your mother go into menopause?

I shall begin with the ubiquitous Soft Kitty, but please add grilled cheese, red vines, label makers, Purell, cocoa with little marshmallows, and Weltschmerz. If you're more Penny-like in nature, then ice-cream and a wide variety of alcohols. If you're Howard-like, add silk pajamas, Katee Sackhoff and a small suitcase of colognes. You get the gist. Comforting things of vague relation to the show. If you can manage it in your potentially code milky green state...

I ran the episode transcripts S1-7 though an editing tool (not me, incidentally) that does a word search and count, and discovered the following statistics concerning bestowals of the endearments "Sweetie" and "Honey" (neither of which I have ever used in my life).

I then ran my vaguely human eye over the results to remove the extraneous endearments, such as the DMV woman referring to Sheldon as "Honey" before threatening to climb over the counter and presumably wallop him. Ditto Leonard’s "Honey"s to Priya and Stephanie, and Howard's two ill-advised "Honey"s to Penny in the 1st Season.

I can't be arsed counting endearments such as Sheldon referring to Penny as "Kitten" and so forth. These are frankly too difficult to quantify and lead to questions over what is a compliment VS an endearment ("Vixen" as compliment VS "Cute little lump of wool" as endearment, for example, in AFF's case), particularly with the numerous examples of Sheldon THINKING he's complimenting Penny when actually he's being an oblivious but good-hearted gobshite.

Behold the results;

P to S – 24 sweeties, 27 honeys

P to L – 22 sweeties, 10 honeys

P to R – 3 sweeties, 3 honeys

P to A – 2 sweeties

P to B – 1 sweetie

L to P – 3 honeys

H to B – 4 sweeties, 10 honeys

B to H – 2 sweeties, 4 honeys

There are interesting variations, such as a peak in "Honey"s for Sheldon from Penny around Season 2 and 4, and a resurgence in "Sweeties" for Leonard in Season 7. Howard is trouncing Bernadette in the endearment department, and Leonard has managed 3 endearments to Penny thus far. I imagine these will increase in Season 8.

Of interest to S/P fanfiction writers in the habit of using “Sweetie” almost exclusively, would be the fact that Penny refers to Sheldon more as “Honey”. Update forthcoming fics accordingly.

His REAL friends, and 3) How many licks it takes to get to the centre of a marble.

I never knew I would have to give up 'nerd/geek' things in order to find love and become a responsible adult. Apparently being scientists at a university, out on their own (save Howard) paying bills, engaging socially with people of similar interests a la comic book store, robot fighting league, renaissance fairs, paintball fields or ComicCon (I mean who goes to ComicCon anyways, right? Dodgy ) isn't enough to constitute maturity if one chooses to read comic books, play D&D and go to Planet of the Apes marathons.

I never knew that you should side with your gf no matter what, even if she attacks/insults your friend (who's doing you a favor for free) for no reason.

I never knew that your ex-gf would find you sexually attractive after telling her that you only did things she liked in order to have sex with her.

I never knew that there were stages of cheating as making out with a girl a couple of times while your gf is in India is 'kinda wrong' but forgivable since you didn't go all the way (even though you regretted not doing it).
I never knew that dropping out of community college and traveling half way across the country to follow your dream to become a movie star didn't constitute as something you're 'passionate about'. Apparently working at a dead-end job while struggling to pay bills, afford acting classes and pay for gas to attend auditions is something you do for the hell of it.]]>
I never knew I would have to give up 'nerd/geek' things in order to find love and become a responsible adult. Apparently being scientists at a university, out on their own (save Howard) paying bills, engaging socially with people of similar interests a la comic book store, robot fighting league, renaissance fairs, paintball fields or ComicCon (I mean who goes to ComicCon anyways, right? Dodgy ) isn't enough to constitute maturity if one chooses to read comic books, play D&D and go to Planet of the Apes marathons.

I never knew that your ex-gf would find you sexually attractive after telling her that you only did things she liked in order to have sex with her.

My husband was a casual viewer at most during seasons 1-3. He'd go with me to watch a taping for our date night, and caught an episode here or there, but for the most part he wasn't interested in another one of my "geek shows". It wasn't until syndication came along that he began to watch them and realized he loved the show (now he can't miss it and even if we're not watching it BBT is on from 7-8pm in our house). So last night I was trying to find out why the continuity didn't bother him and he said it was because he started watching it in syndication and there is no continuity watching that way. (You turn the TV on and a show from season 1 is playing, you turn the channel 1/2 hour later a watch an episode from season 4).

So is syndication to blame for writers getting lazy? Is it cause they know the show got really popular after it started in syndication and that those people aren't watching episodes in order (and when they are, it's butchered for more commercials), so it gives them a pass when writing cause most of the people (8-13 million) watching now aren't expecting or don't care about continuity?

I really think it's past it's peak, jumped the shark, on the slippery slope. We/I keep watching because I'm attached to the characters and TPTB know they have that loyalty and it no longer matters to produce the same quality. Aside from Community all the other sitcoms are terrible. BBT doesn't have much competition. There's some great dramas but not sitcoms.]]>
