Here's the most heartbreaking thing for me about this show: In the beginning, I actually really liked Leonard. It was part due to the actor's skills, but I thought he was fun and nerdy. He had a dash of common sense but could easily be pulled into a nerdy wormhole of sorts.

I held and still do hold that if the writers had abandoned the Lenny pairing, Leonard wouldn't be so hated. I understand the hate, I do! I feel it just the same. But in episodes where he wasn't desperately trying to be Penny's boyfriend, he was one of the funniest characters on the show. And I love Johnny Galecki and I think his expressions and physical comedy did have quite a hand in my affection for the character. I think that Galecki's onscreen charm is the only thing keeping EVERYBODY from hating the character.

My SO is not a shipper but even he says the show got worse after Leonard and Penny got together. Indeed, there is a definite shift where Penny goes from being the failed actress/waitress to Leonard's Girlfriend with no more substance than one of his flings. And Leonard went from dork to Poser Who Is Ashamed Of Who He Is And His Friends And Is A Scumbag.

When I casually mentioned that a lot of people believe Sheldon belonged with Penny (casual so as not to let on how big a raving fangirl I really am), he said, 'yeah I can see that. They make a lot more sense.'

Be they Parsons' finest contortions and vaudevillian hat-tips, or Sheldon's most iconic moments, pick 10 from this list of 24 or substitute your own. I shall add more interfrastically.
There's been a lot of talk about the humanization of Sheldon Cooper over the recent years, so I thought I'd create a thread to discuss his inner nature from an early season perspective. I'm concentrating on his beginnings because this period is almost completely absent from the discussion. Sheldon Cooper was an already fully formed creation which required only minor tweaking. He was hilariously arrogant, cocksure and perfectly autonomous. Being factual to a fault made him funny and his inability to comprehend the inner workings of others gave him an innocence which made him utterly charming.

There is a belief amongst those who prefer the later seasons that the humanization of Sheldon is a recent event but this is an extremely selective viewpoint. Sheldon was a solitary creature pre-S5, his reliance on others appeared to be little more than convenience but his emotions ran deep. From as early as the third episode, it is revealed that his relationships are infinitely more emotive than any other character on the show.

Sheldon was never a robot. This thread is for early sightings of this complex human side...
So i was thinking there could be this episode where Sheldon and Penny are married and host a Halloween party and the theme is Universal Monsters; so Sheldon and Penny host as The Phantom of the Opera and Christine Daae, Howard and Bernadette attend said party as the Wolfman and Gwen Conliffe, Raj goes as The Mummy, etc...
Any other ideas for the other characters or as to how this episode would play out?

I just love the Universal Monster franchise and the Shenny
Ahoy ShennyShipper!

That's a very entertaining notion. To avoid having too many threads though, and confusing my poor overheated brain, do you think we could just have one thread with ALL alternate universe episode ideas in it?
We already have "Wishful Thinking" which is for more "philosophical" (*cough*) thoughts about the show, and the "Homo Novus: Where is he now?" thread which details what happened to him after the arctic (brain eaten by a parasite which took over his body and turned him into the Pod Sheldon we have now etc), and tends to get a bit mad, but we always meant to have an "Alternate Episode Ideas" thread.
Would you like to either start one, or change the name of this thread to include other scenarios?

The same for your threads about all Penny's alternate roles. If they could just go in one thread (say, "Penny's Acting") it would be easier for us to keep track of them, and contribute. I never know which one to add to. You're very prolific with your new threads!

Any other ideas for the other characters or as to how this episode would play out?

Creative suggestions for a title for this thread would be appreciated!

Here is a thread to discuss any and every aspect of Penny as an individual. How did she come to be the way she is? What makes her tick? Why does she act the way she does? Let's delve into her psyche. You could psychoanalyze, talk about her mental and physical tendencies, limitations, vulnerabilities and strengths, or about childhood influences, about her past, her future, her ambitions, her hobbies, her relationships, the important and life-changing incidents in her life, and about how all this has shaped and is shaping her into the person she is today or is going to be in future.

OK, I know this may seem like a silly way to start this thread, or like a very silly question in general, but I really would like to know what kind of pet do you think Penny might keep around, if ever. We already know Sheldon is a cat person. What about Penny? Does she strike you as, say, a dog person? Has she ever shown any interest in an animal/pet in canon at all?

Here is a thread to discuss any and every aspect of Sheldon Cooper as an individual. How did he come to be the way he is? What makes him tick? Why does he act the way he does? Let's delve into his psyche. You could psychoanalyze, talk about his mental and physical tendencies, limitations, vulnerabilities and strengths, or about childhood influences, about his past, his future, his ambitions, his hobbies, the important and life-changing incidents in his life, his relationship with people and with science and about how all this has shaped and is shaping him into the person he is today or is going to be in future.

Just to get the ball rolling in this thread, I quote Dsnynutz's post from the other thread again as well as my reply to it. Hope that's OK.

(01-21-2014, 12:27 AM)Dsnynutz Wrote: Some food for thought. If this was a real show, and not the farce it's become, you could have some very serious psychological discussions on Sheldon's regressing to childish behaviors again and none of them would be good news for canon or TPTB.

Regression, according to psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, is a defense mechanism leading to the temporary or long-term reversion of the ego to an earlier stage of development rather than handling unacceptable impulses in a more adult way. The defense mechanism of regression, in psychoanalytic theory, occurs when an individual's personality reverts to an earlier stage of development, adopting more childish mannerisms. Psychiatrist Joel Gold suggests that careful use of "ARISE" (Adaptive Regression in the service of the Ego) can sometimes yield creative benefits. To the extent that one is handling thoughts and impulses less like an adult, ARISE involves play, appreciation and primitive pleasures, and imagination.

Not that this was the intention of TPTB, but I always felt the childish actions (putting trains in his mouth, etc) Sheldon was displaying was signs of regression. A lot of people with OCD will regress to a time in their life when things made sense to them (more structure/less chaos), and children of abuse if feeling threatened can regress back to a point in childhood where they felt safe. So I think it pretty safe to say that Amy between grooming him for sex and trying to change him has made the character regress to the point of childhood where he felt safe...

In other words, "One way of looking at the show is that we've been watching a slow mental disintegration of one man when the core of his identity is stripped away from him", as SpaceAnjl put it perfectly.

These are actually very good explanations as to what has indeed happened to Sheldon.

Anyway, I personally don't think Amy alone is the cause of the regression and the mental disintegration. I think it's been a chain of factors and events over the years that has put Sheldon where he is now: there is the Arctic incident; the peer pressure in general; the constant mocking and the invalidating of his feelings and his POV by the gang; his own mental and physical tendencies and vulnerabilities as an individual; and yes, of course Amy and her efforts to groom, manipulate and change him and to make him "grow up".

I think it might have something to do with how I came to be a fan of the show in the first place - I literally gorged myself with a ton of episodes within a very short span when the show started airing in syndication. With many a journey to YouTube to supplement so to speak. I almost feel like I absorbed the show osmotically, and, thus, didn't quite have the same experience as a normal viewer, getting a slower (and sequential) introduction to the characters.
I THINK The Adhesive Duck Deficiency is when I really sat up and took notice. I think. Or that might be the episode when I became besotted with Jim. Sigh. It's all so confusing to me now. To this day though I can't get over how he transforms in the scene where Sheldon is "comforting" Penny. The way he cocks his head to the side and grimaces out his comfort-words, he literally changes in appearance. It's a truly stunning performance.
So, since I'm so unsure of the genesis of my own adoration for Sheldon, I'm always fascinated to learn where it all started for other fans. Anybody?
