Just to let you all know, someone deleted the 'Shenny' catagory on The Big Bang Theory wiki site. It was there for years and now it's just gone. Do they really have to keep playing these games? Sigh!

Our fandom has been with BB since the start. Shenny shippers emerged from the very first meeting of Penny in her towel, meeting an awkward Sheldon at 4A. I personally couldn't believe that the creators went with the Leonard and Penny angle, it seems so bland, considering they had unexpected gold between the other two mains. But it is what it is.

Regardless, we still have a place in the history of the BBT fandon and to have someone delete us stinks. I added it back but the original has gone.

Let me kick this off with something I found which I think sums up why I became a Shenny shipper and never even considered Lenny.

- By Rachael Lefler.

"Oh, Leonard. I wanted to be able to like you, I really did. I mean, you are the obvious hero of the show, right? Destined to get into Penny's panties instead of anyone else, because you're the main character. Always right in an argument, even when you shouldn't be, because you're the main character.

Hey, I get it. I've tolerated lots of douche-ish behavior from main characters before. Harry Potter's father, James, was a bully. In My Little Pony, Twilight Sparkle sometimes seems paranoid, alarmist, and obsessive, and would be so if the plot didn't usually prove to the audience that her hunches were right (like when she accused Cadence of being evil, for example). But when Leonard can get away with things like lying to a long-time friend about Penny just to sabotage the friend's chances with her, or, idk, jeopardizing another long-time friend's entire research career just because you found him a little annoying as a traveling companion? That's a little harder to swallow. I also hate how Leonard is the designated love interest for Penny, when she has greater chemistry with Sheldon, and seems to understand him better than, and have more patience in dealing with him, than anyone else does.

Furthermore, Leonard's personality is not that good. He's whiny, and always focused on himself, even when his friends are having real problems and his are relatively minor. He also whines way, way too much about not getting laid. He also admits in one episode that his entire relationship with Penny was at one time all founded on lie after lie after lie; he admitted to pretending to like things she liked to do, and generally enjoy her company, solely as a deception to get in her cooch. I feel that a relationship should be based on honest communication and a real understanding of each other as well as a real mutuality of beliefs, values, and interests. Even if you don't like the same things as your significant other, you still owe them to be honest about it. For example, I never give my boyfriend the impression that I like baseball, and he never pretended to like anime. Why should the audience of the show be sold on one hand the idea that the Penny/Leonard ship is seaworthy, even romantic or cute, and on the other hand be told that the times they were together almost everything Leonard said to her was a lie so he could have sex with her? I mean, if all that matters to Leonard is sex, why doesn't he just rent it."

It’s a hot topic! Sheldon Lee Cooper has had sex for the first time and only time (so far) and I thought I’d open this thread to discuss the way it was handled and for members to talk about how they feel about this development.

Here’s my take:

Shamy sex was shown as quite sacrificial. Sheldon proved his affection by offering a sexual experience as a gift, because he knew what it meant to her. It was not portrayed as mutual attraction and was very in keeping with the history of the character. I was interested to see what they would do next with that. Would they make Sheldon change is mind about sex and feel more desires towards her? It seems not so far. They writers have already gone back to the old “Amy hints, Sheldon avoids” gag. At the end of the day, this is a comedy show and there has to be a laughs. Each couple has to have their ‘funny’. With Lenny it’s Leonard’s insecurity. With Howardette it’s the mother-child dynamic. And Amy wanting sex is Shamys current main punchline.

This seems to be dividing the canon fandom though. I understand that shippers want a true and loving union between their pair but any relationship involving Sheldon has to be funny. It can’t be all Sheldon ‘learns a lesson today’ or ‘Sheldon shows he can change’ scenes. The same would apply if the writers had chosen Shenny as canon. Sheldon and Penny would have to generate laughs and these would have to come from their differences and conflict. If Penny were dating him she would fight a lot harder over the sex issue and it would also be a lot funnier. Humour lightens the mood and softens the subject, which is actually quite serious. The reason Shamy don’t work for me is that Amy isn’t funny when she’s throwing shade at Sheldon. She’s a pity machine. You can’t pity the person Sheldon dates because he's such an arrogant git and pity unbalances the dynamic and takes away the comedy. It means the show has to drop in some overly sentimental scenes as damage control. And great comedy is not meant to be overly sentimental. That’s why Shenny would work because Sheldon and Penny meet on equal terms, they both have big enough egos to take each other on. They are both funnier and sexier.

I don't agree with everything he posted (H/B and L/P having chemistry for example but I do think S/A have the least). This is the first time I have agreed with something about this relationship elsewhere on the internet. EVER! These two are far better as separate characters than together.

A and B are plot devices, not characters. They are tools with which to carry out the "change." I am suspicious of any character who is introduced for the sole purpose of being a love-interest.

Plus, none of these characters seemed to be deeply unhappy before the "changes." (Especially not Sheldon. Leonard was perhaps the unhappiest.) Did they have problems, maybe even serious problems? Yes. But so does everyone. There is no problem-free life. We all have challenges, disappointments, neuroses, fears, and areas of weakness. I don't think anyone can honestly say that these people's lives are better now. They've simply traded one set of problems for another.

Life is not some 12-step program where each person is steadily progressing towards some arbitrary definition of "better."

As I've mentioned before, I find the values promoted by this show to be utterly bizarre. When you examine it, it's extremely old-fashioned: the point of life is to get married/coupled ASAP, to the first person who is even remotely suitable, and this is the only rite of passage that can make a child into an adult?

Are we living in pioneer times, with a shortage of people to marry? People in their mid to late twenties need to "grow up" and stop acting youthful? This show's attitude towards relationships is downright Victorian. It's almost fundamentalist. Life has no other purpose than to marry young and reproduce? Are we living on a farm where we need 12 kids to plant the crops?

It's just *so* backwards and wacky, to me. I can't comprehend where the writers/creators are coming from, at all. This show's definition of maturity is to act middle-aged at 30. It's so completely out of sync with the current state of our society. I don't know anyone IRL who is in a constant state of panic about being single, or anyone who thinks you're a failure if you're not married/coupled by 27.

It's just *so* retrogressive and weird. Do the writers think we're living in a medieval village where you'll only live to be 50, so hurry up and get married before you die?

There are all different kinds of lifestyles out there. The show seems to deny that, strenuously. They won't show us a character who is content to be single*, or a gay relationship that isn't treated as a punchline, or anything other than "boy and girl must get together and stay together, now, now, NOW." They won't even admit that two people might like each other but not want to live together, or that couples can be together without a formal commitment. There's only one right way of doing things, and that's the most conventional and traditionalist way.

*Sheldon was content to be single, but they wouldn't leave that alone.

Okay, this rant has been brewing in my mind for a while, and I will try to write it carefully, because I might come off seeming narrow-minded or seeming like I'm telling other people what they can/can't ship, and that's not my intention. It's a sensitive subject. Anyway, here goes:

I find "multi-shippers" irritating. And when I say "multi-shippers", I mean people who make statements like "I ship Sheldon/Penny...and Sheldon/Amy, and Penny/Leonard, and Penny/Stuart, and Sheldon/Leonard, and Leonard/Amy, Stuart/Raj, Raj/Howard, Raj/Penny, Penny/Leonard/Sheldon and Penny/Amy/Sheldon and Leslie/Penny and yadda-yadda-yadda-yadda."

The characters are not interchangeable. "I ship each and every character with each and every other character" is not a ship. If you just enjoy reading/writing shippy scenarios and you're not picky about which characters are involved, fair enough, but at least be honest about it. Each and every character has a fascinating sexual and interpersonal chemistry with each and every other character? No.

Now, please let me clarify. I like unusual ships. I like slash. I like (and prefer, obviously) non-canon ships. This is not a question of canon versus non-canon. I do not presume to tell other people what they can or can't ship, although, like everyone here, I think some ships are unpleasant or unconvincing or incompatible, and I'll say so.

Putting all the characters together in a blender is not a ship. If someone was honest enough to say "I just like reading/writing porn and I'm not particular about which pairings are featured", that's legit. "I ship Shenny but I also find Shamy interesting" would likewise be a legit statement. "I ship Sheldon/Penny and Leonard/Penny and Sheldon/Amy" is a nonsensical statement. Something like "I find all of those possible ships equally interesting" would be a more logical way of putting it.

Maybe the definition of the term "ship" is changing and I'm not aware of it, but I was under the impression that when you say "I ship X and Y", you mean that those two characters are the *most compatible* and their relationship is the most positive or the most exciting or the most entertaining, compared to the other options.

Yes, yes, there are countless possible universes, like Sheldon told us. Yes, people can write or ship whatever they want. But "I ship it" means that the pairing in question is *superior to the other options, in your opinion.* It means you feel invested in that pairing. "I ship everyone with everyone" is meaningless.

Again, I know this might make me sound narrow-minded or grouchy. If there's a pairing that doesn't work well in canon and someone wants to make it work better in fanfiction, good for them. Go for it. But I am not impressed with people who seem to just toss random combinations of characters into sexual situations like they're pulling names out of a hat....

It just seems show-offy and silly, like "Look what I can do!!!"

The characters are not interchangeable. If they were, then the canon ships wouldn't be as awful as they are.

ETA: I am not arguing against obscure pairings. If you want to ship Captain Sweatpants/Katee Sackhoff, be my guest. But "I ship Shenny and Shamy and these two things can co-exist and are equally valid in my mind" is, at best, a rather strange attitude. It's almost like you're unwilling to express a strong and definite opinion. It's like you're hedging your bets, like "Well, I ship everything, so nobody can disagree with me or criticize me, because I've got all my bases covered."

Sheldon as Demi-sexual?

So we all know that asexual characters get like no media coverage, and when they do they're like two-dimensional robots. Even characters that explicitly state they have no interest in romance or sex (like Sheldon, or bbc's Sherlock) are merely seen to be celibate. Which is kind of what the writers of the show have sort of done to Sheldon so... It's kind of valid. I mean they mention he likes to get himself off, but there's no reaction towards other people, in the immortal words of Penny,"What's Sheldon's deal?"

The thing is, Sheldon totally fits the definition of demi-sexual, in the sense that I can only see him being sexually attracted to someone if they had a strong emotional bond(cough-Penny-cough), despite having a working libido, it merely won't extend to other people. And he says himself that he will probably have sex with Amy, meaning he doesn't seem disgusted by it, he's simply not over the moon about the idea, and hyper-selective about anyone he would do so with. Almost like he's waiting to hit some 'intimacy threshold' in which it's considered appropriate? Maybe?

I just wanted to start the conversation and see what you guys think, so any takers?

I thought that title was a mite more interesting than “Sheldon’s mildly inappropriate remarks”
Anyroad, this topic has sprung from a genuine bafflement of mine. Frequently and tirelessly the concept of Sheldon and Penny being either “sibling” or “maternal” in nature has been forced upon us by hysterical characters, like a nanny wielding a bar of laundry soap, to wash our mouths out for daring to suggest otherwise.
As a non-romantic Sheldonite, the fact that I think his comments are a trifle inappropriate for a sibling relationship, and rather suspect of the writers’ deliberate manipulation of the audience, to the point of cliched teasing, is rather telling. Because I generally don’t pick up on such things. Ergo, it must be quite obvious.

I have no siblings myself…Perhaps others can enlighten me on whether it’s normal to peek at your naked sister and discuss drinking milkshakes through your genitals…

I’m not saying the writers are suggesting a secret agenda, I’m saying the writers are not oblivious to such interpretations.

Here’s a few things I can think of off the top of my noggin;

S/P innuendo

“Probably. I’m just enjoying the foreplay.”
“Please Penny, enough, I have to sleep” “Ok, well you were great, thanks. Oh, hey Leonard, listen, don’t go in Sheldon’s room, he’s not wearing bottoms.”
“We’re like an old married couple.”
“It’s hot when Sheldon talks dirty.”
“How do you not tear off his clothes and take him right here on this table?”
“50 cents off Vagisil.” “Think of me when you apply it.”
“Wait! You have to help me get into bed. Sheldon has to get me into bed!”
“Spread your legs, invite them in”
“I now have a much better understanding of friends with benefits.”
“Your ken can kiss my Barbie.”
“I don’t want to know how many underpants you own. Although, based on the floor of your bedroom, I’d say it’s a thousand.”
“Well, if it’s any consolation, I’m sure Leonard’s tormented every moment he’s away from your warm embrace and cherry lips.”
“It won’t help my case if the judge is busy trying to read the word Juicy scrawled across your buttocks.”

I mean every time I think of Penny watching Doctor Who with Sheldon I imagine she relates a lot to Rose even though she probably wants to be an Amy Pond with her very own Rory and Doctor. Plus we all know Sheldon practically would be the Doctor if we're keeping up with this analogy. Or we could talk about Star Trek and the fact that Sheldon quite obviously would be a Spock incarnate. If we go down this road Penny is something like Kirk or Uhura depending on if we're talking about the original series or the reboot. Feel free to add and expand upon this please!
