I actually found that Sheldon's enthusiasm about shows, comics etc made him more relatable for me, personally. I wouldn't know a Manolo Blahnik if someone poked me with one, and have only a dim conception of most mainstream popular culture. But I can be very fervent on the subject of Joss Whedon or Harry Potter. Sheldon was one of Us, and they have not only taken that away from him and us by extension, it is now being made clear that fandom is something weird to be mocked and distanced from.
...maybe Sheldon's 'Fun With Flags' is a covert cry for help. He's semaphoring a distress signal out over YouTube, and waiting for rescue. *blinks* That could work.
The show has no truck with continuity, and will happily rewrite events to accommodate the latest groupthink. Things like the Nimoy Napkin are being overwritten, and I dread to think how they'd revamp the Adhesive Ducks. Except this Sheldon clearly can't be trusted to operate a damn pedal-car, let alone a proper vehicle.
