(I realise I said something else that could be mis-interpreted). I think there is a culture(in the West), that believes what people need is a soothing programme/sitcom(we had things like 'The Good Life' here!). But a thought provoking, challenging programme/film makes me feel more alive. So I think Sheldon does thrive on 'mental exaltation'. Sometimes he has those moments of wonder for anything from obtuse concepts, beautiful maths, or the inherent stupidity of humans. From my own experience; I believe that once I have order around me, nothing domestic to interfere, I can think about more important ideas(actually on an obscure forum).
