There wasn't even a chance to speculate on what kind of partner Sheldon would want; The writers created Fowler and now we are stuck with watching the train wreck that is Shamy. 
Sheldon has now fallen down to the same level with Penny; sad, directionless and using alcohol to soften the blows of life. Just a few episodes ago he was going on about taking risks, being dedicated to his beliefs and being a "dreamer". Now he is full of self doubt and alcohol.
Someone needs to give him the "Dreamers" talk and and it needs to not be Leonard or Amy. Maybe someone more invested in his well-being than their own selfish goals.
The whole identity of this character has been torn to shit; and it'll be worse if its just a throw away plot that won't get brought up again.
