'There is a BBT cast answers your questions. I believe it was for the Season 3 DVDs. In it both Jim and Johnny talk about that each of their characters wanted to have the other ones moms while growing up so instead of finding a girl that reminded them of their moms (which most boys do) they would find someone who reminded them of the mom they wanted (Leonard/Mary and Sheldon/Beverly).' > I'm not sure men are attracted to women who remind them of their mothers. I think we all create an 'idealised partner'. That might include; an aspect of opposite sex parent+a characteristic from another relative+characteristics(and particularly 'look') of a TV/film character. But also I think people can be attracted to a partner who has all the traits that were lacking in the opposite sex parent. Hence, Leonard is attracted to Penny. Sheldon is difficult. Mary is pleasant, straightforward, but a 'bible basher', literally! To Sheldon's intellect any form of superstition would have been an anathema.
