They want the characters to be as plain and boring as they are. These fans are stupid and deluded and unfortunately they will win. And the show that results from their desires being fulfilled will either go off the air quickly or be on the air forever.
um, I support all of this, except to say that I thought Giles was by far the sexiest thing on BtVS, because somehow the whole demonically-animated corpse thing has never worked for me. (sanguine vampiris is a whole other story.) But yes, the whole show is skewed towards the wants, needs and desires of people who are stunted in more than their stature.
Interesting point about the idea of Sheldon as 'past his prime'. That idea was touched upon in the Dennis Kim episode, and I do think Sheldon will feel the pressure of up and coming wunderkind, particularly if he doesn't get his finger out and stop messing about with flags, trains and whatever else he is using to distract himself from facing the present horror of his existence. He's stopped being the smartest guy in the room, now, he's just a weirdo. How much of that is a loss of confidence from the events of the last few years would be hard to say.
