So it's not just the gang who have never liked Sheldon for who he was but also some of the fans as well.

There is no question that Sheldon, both the Vintage version and the current version, had and has his flaws, and of course people are entitled to their opinion and have every right to dislike him if that's how they feel. Still I think the strong hatred some fans express towards him is not..normal, for lack of a better word. Based on what I've read of what his haters have to say, I believe a lot of the hatred comes from completely misunderstanding him and missing the point of his character. I've seen how many fans misinterpret everything he says - or used to say as Vintage Sheldon - completely forgetting about and ignoring the fact that many of those comments for which they are hating Sheldon are not meant to be hateful and come from his lack of social skills and from his science-oriented and analytical mind that has him express and see many of those comments as mere facts, sometimes as helpful facts even.

And I find it a bit strange that the haters seem to forget this little fact about him because the show and the writing, as lazy as it can be, actually has highlighted this characteristic of Sheldon on numerous occasions and in different ways, to the point that there are people out there that believe the Sheldon character to be Autistic. The show has even had other characters talk about and articulate this quirk of Sheldon on occasion. (Bernadette talking to Howard in the french maid outfit episode comes to mind.)

So how his critics seem to keep missing this is beyond me. That's why I suspect some of these "critics" are in fact the fans who always related to Leonard (and later Amy) and begrudged all the focus and the popularity the Sheldon character received in the early seasons. That's why they now want him limited and changed.
