I don't understand this bizarre re-purposing either. It's like using a Ming Vase as a pisspot in the local hospice....When ANY BUCKET WOULD DO.
Why did they create this beautiful, intricate, delicate and largely unfathomable character, only to blunt his details, scrub down his shine, and reshape him into the commonest, dullest, most dispiriting cliches imaginable? The hen-pecked husband. The abrasive jerk. The Idiot Child.

Major, while it's kind of you to call it a post of precision, that post is in fact a rant! Between reading Witchdocor's brilliant idea for a strange, mental episode (aka what the show could have been) and reading FlyingMonkey's report from Shamyland about how they think Amy has changed Sheldon for the better!! (aka what the show is today), I felt a strong need to rant! I HAD to vent! Hence the post! lol!
As for the reason(s) why they changed Sheldon the way they have, that's something many of us on here have been trying to figure out. It's absolutely baffling. But as others have pointed out, improving the other characters' profile (Leonard's especially) has definitely been one of the main reasons. The writers' laziness, lack of creativity and running out of ideas can be another factor? Although I still don't think those fully explain the blatant character assassination that has been going on. So I'm wondering maybe there are some people in the creative team of the show that begrudge the character's success (and also have a fear of the people who are too intelligent and different), so they decided to break him and now maybe even get some kind of sick enjoyment out of seeing the character lose the core of who he is little by little? *shrug*
