Just imagine all the crazy scenarios they could have written for all the guys in general, and for Sheldon in particular. I remember watching an interview with Jim. It was done back in season 3 I think. And when talking about the stories the show would come up with, he said (not direct quote), "Our show is about science and geniuses, so the world is our oyster" and he was right.
But why oh why the show instead decided to go down the tired, old, worn-out road of relationship and couples drama is something I don't get. Especially when it comes to Sheldon, I'm trying to fathom why the show would create a "special" character, a genius with all those quirks, just to turn around and to decide to give him a girlfriend and to make him normal??? Couldn't they see that keeping him as the quirky genius and in his own world actually gave them much more interesting, fresh and different material to work with?
I have no problem with romance. But the thing is romance was not the point of the Sheldon character, nor was it the source of his humor. Getting into a (permanent) relationship is against the nature of the character. We already had characters like Leonard, Howard and Raj who were desperate for romance. The writers could write all kinds of romantic/relationship scenarios for them and explore relationships and romance to their hearts' content through those characters. Why on earth did they have to drag Sheldon into it too??
