It was part of what made him endearing, hilarious and likeable, he went places none of us could tread because he was innocent and this is why he got a free pass on a lot of his behaviour. Sheldon was a slice of light relief from society. I don't believe any early Sheldon fan took him seriously, as a way to act, he was a symbol of what not to do, to say and he made us laugh because he alone could do it.
