I agree with everything that has been said so far - and you guys have articulated it much better than I ever could. Personally, I feel that they have debased the characters I love so much that even the golden years have become tainted. I just can't enjoy seasons 1-3 knowing that there have been/will be many more seasons of utter garbage.
For all the reasons cited here, I think that the wishy-washy way that Jim now plays the Sheldon character is probably the worst offence that the show has committed. Frankly, they don't give enough material to Kaley for her to really shine - and since they are so dead-set against Penny having any quality scenes with Sheldon there are so few ways that she could be utilised effectively. On the other hand, I blame both Jim and the director for the way that Sheldon has turned out recently. What happened? Jesus Christ, are Jim's acting skills so limited that this is the only he can play a romantic lead?
I absolutely adored Sheldon because he was so assertive and confident - he wasn't particularly manly in voice or appearance but, by jingo, the way he carried himself in both manner and voice was something fierce. When Sheldon said that he was the smartest in the room, I believed him. When he said he was going to win the Nobel prize, I believed him. Yes, he did have moments when he was childish (although I think obstinate is a much better term) but those moments were few and far between and his smarts eclipsed anything else. Above all else, I appreciated that he wasn't apologetic for what/who he was - which was refreshing when juxtaposed to the Leonard character. Hence, I rooted for the Sheldon and I wanted him to succeed badly - mostly in Science but also romantically. I thought that it would have been amusing and an interesting running gag if the most outlandish character (at least to Leonard, Howard, Raj et al) became one half of a loving, funny and wacky relationship all rolled into one. And because I adored Sheldon so much I thought he deserved someone special - basically NOT AMY (a character whose purpose for existing is so that we can pity her).
To me, no other two characters were more suited to each other (both chemistry-wise and their comedic potential) as Penny and Sheldon. I felt that they could bring out the best in each other. Penny needed someone that would challenge her- not to treat her (and please excuse me) as just a fanny and pretty face. Sheldon needed someone that could expand his horizons - to show him that he could be both the master of the universe and the master of human relationships (the one thing that has always baffled and eluded him). For me, that would have been the epitome of growth and character development. I'm not suggesting that Sheldon would easily master romantic relationships - but the comedy (because after all this is a sitcom although it seems to me that tptb have forgotten) would be his attempts to master romance and probably only occasionally succeed. I think that Sheldon is an endearing character and firmly believe he would have no trouble attracting women (Princess Panchali (?)). Nothing would have pleased me more than to see him use his intensity and sheer willpower to win a potential mate.
