"The gang go to a wine bar and run into Penny’s old boyfriend, Zack. Bernadette gets stuck spending the evening with Sheldon when she can’t go to the wine tasting with the group, and things don’t go as planned when Raj introduces his new girlfriend, Claire."

It was no Shenny, but Sheldon hanging out with Bernie is the next best thing. He made a really good effort to entertain her and even open up to her. He designed a whole D&D game, just for her and they both enjoyed playing it (hats off to Jim for that performance, he owned this ep).

Did Sheldon do anything like that for Amy? Probably not, she would kill the immersion with her constant nagging and negative energy. And she's wondering why he's so uncomfortable around her, but so close to Penny...

Bernie proves that Sheldon is not a problem here. He can be close to anybody as long as they treat him the same - a reciprocity. The Ducks episode explains this the best, when Penny compares him to Wall-e. Amy just does not get him this way.

Plus, the Amy/Howard interaction was interesting, for two reasons: 1) Did the writers forget that they bonded over Neil Diamond? 2) It was similar to any interactions between Amy/Leonard lately, which have been awkward as well. Interesting that Amy has such awkward interactions with guys who are not Sheldon. Makes me wonder just what is Amy's motive for being in the group anyway...like if Sheldon weren't there would she no longer be interested?
