Yes, it was and Leonard actually tells Penny that Sheldon "is a bit of a germaphobe" I can't tell you how many arguments I have seen on the canon site disputing this. A fear of germs in no way explains why he won't have sex. There are barrier methods and Sheldon already owns rubber gloves.
My meaning being that there are other forces at work here.
