I mean, I get what they're trying to do, but low self-asteenm and ideals just come about in people's minds organically, I've always thought. I don't think kids are as impressionable as people tend to assume.
I think it's a representation thing? I mean there are people who are just more naturally optimistic/pessimistic about themselves. But I've known kids as young as five declare themselves 'fat' when I worked in a daycare. Like kids aren't *supposed* to be chubby. When kids play with dolls/action-figures they like being represented by the doll, pretending that it's them. I know growing up my favorite barbie was the only one I owned with brown hair because she looked like me. It's not necessarily that kids don't understand that barbie isn't real, it's more along the lines that toys often establish a frame of reference. And it does affect you as you grow older, whether or not your consciously aware of it.
That said, those dolls look fugly. Couldn't they have tried a better aesthetic?
