This is the episode where the writers first came up with the idea of getting cats to satisfy a need for human interaction. Sheldon was the one trying to talk sense to Leonard, and explaining to him that he was just getting a cat because he was upset about Penny. Later, the writers use this idea again but they reverse it and Sheldon gets the cat and it's Leonard pointing out that he's doing it, to feel better. This was recycled for Zazzy in season 4.
