NutzOh look they had them sit as their character "couples". You can bet if the choice was theirs it would be Johnny, Kaley and Jim on one couch (and in that order) and the rest of the cast on the other
Yeah they were ordered and they did that too much on the show as well. It's part of the reason it got to be so boring towards the end.

According to the Independent the show was set to run another 2 seasons when Jim decided to leave. It must have been hard for him, given he was deciding the fate of the entire show and the other acrors by quitting.
