Yes three of the guys definitely live up to the unfit stereotype. I even noticed a set of weights in Howard's room. But only Sheldon exercises. [Image: tumblr_inline_mxgebuWNJh1ri73d6.gif]

You're so good at staying on topic, Pilot Fish.

"If you had control over the writing/plot of TBBT, what direction would you have gone in as oppose to the farcical disappointment we have now?"

1. Absolutely no Melissa Rauch.

2. Amy can be a minor character on the level of Leslie and Kripke, or she can just not exist.

3. No weddings, babies, or deaths.

4. None of the "Howard in space" or "Howard's long-lost father" storylines.

5. Minor characters used sparingly, but used well: more of Leslie, Kripke, Ramona, more from Raj's parents, Sheldon's relatives, etc.

6. All characters can have other friends outside of "the group", and other adventures/experiences which don't involve "the group."

7. Character development is very subtle and occurs via friendship and other experiences, not via marriage/romance/dating.

8. Science, math, technology, sci-fi, and nerd stuff.

9. No weddings, babies, or deaths.

10. Storylines are low-key and organic, not big, melodramatic ratings-whore stuff.

11. This show is about friendship and nerdy hijinks, not romance and LTRs.

10. Show ends after a grand total of four seasons, with NO major changes in cast, format, or premise.

11. I would be totally okay if this show ended with all characters single and no major changes in their lives. I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I don't need big "story-arcs."

12. No weddings, babies, or deaths.

13. The Howard-Raj duo is a core component of this show and is not to be broken-up or interfered-with.

14. I am not cool with the violent humor and people getting kicked/punched.

15. I am not cool with verbal cruelty and people humiliating each other. Teasing and sarcasm is one thing, but that line is easily crossed.

16. I totally agree that it would be fun to have more fantasy/AU/surreal types of episodes. These characters like sci-fi and fantasy, so let's see some sci-fi and fantasy.

Good grief that's very well thought out!
I have to scarper, but I particularly agree with;

7. Character development is very subtle and occurs via friendship and other experiences, not via marriage/romance/dating.
&
11. This show is about friendship and nerdy hijinks, not romance and LTRs.

The friendships have been getting a bum rap these past few seasons.

Also, regarding the show ending "with all characters single and no major changes in their lives. I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I don't need big "story-arcs." That's an ENORMOUSLY popular opinion around here. You'll fit in splendidly!
Regards, Idle.

(I put it in here because I have no idea how upsetting it will be to the poor fragile ducks back in L'orange)

Thank you so much for your reply! TBH, I was very nervous about joining these forums, but now I'm glad that I finally did!

***deep breath, here goes***

Personally, I believe that a TV series, unlike a novel or a movie, is not a linear thing and does NOT need a definite "beginning, middle, and end." I'm not saying that a series should end on a total cliffhanger, but I don't need all the I's dotted and all the T's crossed. I'm totally okay with some things being left open-ended.

I'm also a big fan of things that are essentially plotless, things that are more just "a day in the life." What I like (or liked) about TBBT was being a fly on the wall in this nerdy world.

I am a major Seinfeld fan, and we've all heard the saying that Seinfeld was "about nothing", but it was about nothing in a way that I find tremendously engrossing. I would watch whole seasons of the BBT guys playing board-games, having discussions, going to the comic book store, just going about their usual routine. I really would.

To me, the appeal of a sitcom is that feeling of timelessness, that cyclical feeling, the ability to watch the episodes in any order without missing anything, the feeling that the characters are old friends, just waiting for you to come and visit them again.

Hiya, Louise. Hit the nail on the head there.

RE: Wishful Thinking... - Louise - 08-18-2014

"I think I had an epiphany today (could be very well be the case somone else mentioned it before): They guys know each other about 10 years, right? So how about showing us the (-)3 years before? Some smart producers should pick up the idea. I'd certainly watch it, even without Penny."

BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT, BRILLIANT. This is my dream come true, seriously.

Also, since we're in "what-if" territory: perhaps a lot of problems could've been solved by making the characters a bit younger, at the start of the series. Maybe the Canon Brigade wouldn't be clamoring for everyone to get married, grow up, settle down, "mature", et cetera, if the characters were in their early twenties instead of their early-to-late thirties. Back in 2007, all of them looked very young, except possibly Galecki. Simon looked about 17 Smile If the series started with the characters being about 20, and then ended after a sensible four or five seasons, there might be less room for viewers to scream "grow up!"

I could go for a version of this show where Sheldon is working on his Phd and the other three are undergrads, or something along those lines. More of a university-themed show. I always liked the early-season episodes that take place at Cal-Tech. Has there ever been a sitcom about the inner workings of a college, before? That's some fertile ground for satire, though perhaps with a limited audience.

I like to think of the characters being very young. It's endearing. I like the whole "boy genius" feel of some early eps.

Of course, what my Id wants is my Howard & Raj spin-off with occasional cameos from Sheldon and NONE of the major female characters. And no, it would not consist of Howard continuously hitting on women in bars, being rejected, and looking pathetic. That is such a strawman argument. There are a million different directions his path could've gone.

Ah, I just sent you a PM about how to upload your avatar but I see you're on it!

I agree. The age of the characters has created a problem, they shouldn't have made them so much older than Penny. Particularly Sheldon, who is now pushing 40 but acts like a preschooler in these later seasons. He was a prodigy and they could have written him a lot younger than Parsons, he has the face to get away with it.
