I think Penny was basically a tomboy until she was about fourteen, and then she went girly-girl, and stopped using her brain. She went from rebuilding a tractor at twelve to unable to use a glue gun at twenty-seven(?) - I imagine she came from somewhere where 'smart' girls were seen as unattractive, and she absorbed all the wrong lessons about self and body image. The whole acting dream plays into the idea that she lives her life by how other people see her, and measures her self-worth by attention, not always the good kind.
Yes I agree. Also I imagine Sheldon and Penny had similar childhoods; learning about chess, football, shooting, fishing from their fathers. Sheldon in his room reading about internal combustion engines, Penny rebuilding one. Both gaming, with brothers and friends. Penny is still the best shot. I suppose they both dreamed of escaping. But everything changed for Penny. 'Beverley: And then, I’m assuming, you entered adolescence.
Penny: Uh-huh, he called me Slugger until I got my first training bra, and then he just stopped playing catch with me. I wasn’t Slugger anymore.'(S2e15) But you can still see that tomboy beneath her new persona. She doesn't just live in a theoretical world, like the guys, and has become a social being![Image: hqdefault.jpg]

We could probably infer a lot about young Penny from her bedroom.[Image: Penny-The-Staircase-Implementation-3-22-...53-480.jpg]

Love the early Penny/Sheldon dynamic where she actually challenged him, rather than the last few seasons.

Love that scene! The perfect comeback to a sleazy comment!

You know, Penny really has some violent tendencies. Probably a good person to have in an apocalypse.

Love the Zarnecki gif of Penny standing up for her boys. Great episode!

My word though, how I want this Penny back! I love that she's looking out for her friends and not afraid to take on a much larger opponent. And Kaley! She's a marvel of comedic brilliance, from that snark-infused "oh boy" to her wide-eyed astonishment at having subconsciously burped out some Star Trek trivia. Her timing and execution here is flawless.

Totally! What a great version of the character. Too bad she's been dragged down into the morass.
Cleaning up my hd and I came upon this review for a story of mine. Thought it was interesting.

Make It Up As I Go: that was one of the things that convinced me that penny was not meant for leonard. She doesn't quit when she cares. When she is passionate about something, when she really wants it, she fights for it.(p*** pinata polarization) She is a big ol five. When she feels trapped, when she feels powerless, (i.e. barbarian sublimation) a small new negative five as it were. She backs down or runs. If she really wanted him (leonard) it wouldn't be what she settled for, it would be what she fought for.

God, I love Howard! In the last scene, he looks at her, all bruised up from her fight/feeding her one of his best come-on's: "May I say you look comely tonight?"
Penny: "Thank you."
Then he turns to Raj, speaking low/aside: "You're right, this filly's been broken." So he just set her up to see if she'd take a shot at him, and was left disappointed. Now THAT'S depth of character..
So the show has 3 talented physical comedians; Kaley, Jim and Simon, 2 lumps; Mayim and Johnny, and two that could go either way, Melissa and Kunal. And what do TPTB do? They make it all about the lumps.

Yup. Totally agree, dev.
Penny's reaction to anti-Penny sentiment:
"I'm polymerized tree sap and you're an inorganic adhesive, so whatever verbal projectile you launch in my direction is reflected off of me, returns on its original trajectory and adheres to you."
