I can not believe we don't have a Doctor Who thread. I have watched this show since I was knee high and here we go...

So what do you all make of the new man. He is definitely charismatic but the new season has been a bit dull. Not sure if it's just that the stories have been lacking or that Peter is not quite settled into the character. I kept waiting for him to be deep, dark and strange but he just seems baffled. Perhaps he needs an older assistant, one that suits him. Still he's got something no???

I loved how they kept the same theme over 50 years. (how could they improve on that spooky sound?) Imagine being the composer how gets to do the new theme!! Loves the 1980s one...

The original theme used to scare the beejeebees out of me. I think it's got too safe, it should terrify small children like it did me. Big Grin There'll be a test on these later... Tongue
Yea! a Doctor Who thread. I don't know why this didn't happen sooner. I like Peter I think he's a darker character, which the show needed (the guilty, whining old guy in the young body was getting old) I have to admit, I never really connected with Matt as the Doctor (not that he didn't have brilliant moments).

I also am really looking forward to the end of Clara this season. (if the rumor is true) I never got her character at all. She treated (in Moffat's own words)the Doctor like a dog to be played with once a week and then sent back to the doghouse. 1. The Doctor needs a companion that cares enough to understand that he's rubbish on his own. 2. Her jumping into his time stream didn't make sense to me since she had basically been with him for 7 adventures and didn't know him at all. and 3. Moffat having her save him last season and then made it so she told comforted him as a child and basically gave him his philosophy on life (in another circular Paradox), just kind of pissed me off for some reason. BTW, I hope I wasn't the only one who looks at this evil Mary Poppins and went another Psychotic girlfriend for the Doctor? God no!

Just a thought, if the War Doctor was the ninth Doctor, and the Meta-crisis was the 12th Doctor, doesn't that mean that The Doctor basically left Rose in the Alt Universe which the Doctor that would turn his back on the name and become the Valeyard? (Not to mention that means at least he would get back to the original universe) I would LOVE to see David play the Valeyard against Peter's Doctor.
I am liking Capaldi as the Doctor. I enjoy the way he is playing the part but I think the writing is kind of all over the place. It doesn't help that I don't care for the Pink character or his relationship with Clara. I find the pair dull and their story is taking up too much space. Clara, sometimes I like her and sometimes(probably more often)I find her irritating or boring. The personality seems to change with the script. So yeah, I hope she is moving on

I am with you Nutz, Clara comforting The Doctor and giving him his life philosophy was very irritating.
I think it will be good to move on from Clara as well. She went well with Matt's Dr but it's not so great with Peter. You know that episode annoyed me as well. The doctor would remember her and injecting her into his childhood was just wrong. She's already interweaved in his timeline. I was really hoping they would come up with a 'hiding' creature which was real. Dr Who is a lot about the creatures and this one sounded promising.

David and Peter together would be awesome.

And Gamma - Pink bores the heck out of me too. Why would she go for someone so straight laced?
So what's the conclusion--tune in to the new Who or wait until they get things gelled? If it helps, I tuned out the Matt years as I preferred David and Tom Baker so you get what my taste is.
I don't know WPP. I do like the new Doctor, but I kind of agree with you on Matt. I have yet to make it through all of his seasons(I have seen a majority of his episodes) . I too liked Baker, and Tennant(also liked Eccelston) I have had a suspicion for a while that the writing/show direction was at least partially to blame for my view on Matt and I think the new season is confirming my hunch. You will get entertaining episodes and then you get a bunch of episodes that look too much like someone is trying to be very clever and can't really pull it off. You end up with big plot holes and inconsistencies, and Clara.

I think you might like the Doctor. For me its the non-Doctor bits that tend to be irritating these days.Big Grin
Marginally related, I watched Selfie, a new series featuring Karen Gillan (Amy Pond) & Jon Cho that juxtaposes our current informationlet-driven social media and Pygmalion. I liked it.

By crikey that's it! You nailed it! Big Grin I felt like the show was getting rather soap-opera-y. I liked Doctor Who when it was about the science and adventure. He's a scientist-explorer not a fairy tale character dagnabbit!
I end up liking all the Doctors in the end and I'll probably like this one eventually. David was amazing but I did like Matt as well, although at times he seemed a little young to carry off 900+. Tom Baker was the first Doctor I got really hooked on as well.

I think this is meant to be Matt? Big Grin

Peter is so embarrassed at what a massive Dr Who fan he was as a child.

I'm loving Capaldi as the Doctor. I'm with you guys: Matt never gelled with me. I ended up liking him okay in the end, but he will never be in my top favorites. I will always blame the writing and directing for the decline in story quality. I've been saying it for years: Moffat needs to go. He's a one-trick pony. He's always doing the same story-line with just a slight tweak to it. I think Capaldi and Jenna-Louise Coleman are doing a great job with the material they're given.
